17 May 2021 marks the first working day of the new phase 2. Work from home is announced as the default mode but there are still many who need to work in their offices.
Here is my personal encounter of the public transport situation from a heartland to town.
Sengkang MRT station is usually packed with commuters in the morning. There was significantly less crowd on the platform level today.
Unlike any other mornings, there are actually still seats available at 9am on the train travelling towards Harbourfront.
Alighting at Dhoby Ghaut, the North East line station was much less packed than usual even when a train arrived.
Being an interchange for 3 lines, this section of Dhoby Ghaut is usually packed during the peak hours. Today, the crowd is significantly less than just last week.
Over at the North South line platform, there were still a sizable amount of commuters waiting for the train.
Over at Raffles Place MRT station, there are still commuters getting to their workplace but the crowd was pretty sparse.
At this famous open area just out of Raffles Place MRT station, there were limited people seated down and going to their offices.
Over at Merlion Park, there was actually no one at the platform taking photos of the iconic Merlion.
New Phase 2 starts today in Singapore. New measures include the banning of dining-in at F&B establishments and groups to be reduced to 2 people.
Here is the situation all around Singapore today.
This is the situation at Paya Lebar at 10am. Paya Lebar is usually crowded on Sundays as many friends from Indonesia meet there on their off days.
Over at Orchard Road, it is abnormally quiet on a Sunday. Much less crowd can be seen in shopping malls and on the streets.
Around 1pm at Tampines Mall, the crowd was visibly less compared to other Sundays. There are still some crowd at B1 buying food for takeaway where many food kiosks are. At around 5pm, the level 3 of the mall was unexceptionally quiet.
JEM and West Coast Plaza
Over in the malls in the west, there were significantly less shoppers as well. This can be observed in JEM and West Coast Plaza from images sent to us by friends of out page.
Toa Payoh Central
Toa Payoh Central is usually very crowded every weekend and you can see moderately less crowd today. It is interesting to see mostly groups of only 2 shoppers and solo shoppers walking around this heartland central.
Cow Play Cow Moo Suntec City
At 11pm yesterday, there was still a queue to enter Cow Play Cow Moo on level 3 of Suntec City Mall. At 5pm today, there was no queue to enter which is rare on Sundays. Inside the centre, there is also much less crowd compared to just yesterday.
Situation in supermarkets in heartland and non-heartland after new Phase 2 announcement
Following the announcement of the new Phase 2 today, I checked out supermarkets and received updates from friends of our page.
Bugis Junction Cold Storage
I was in Bugis, so I decided to check out Cold Storage at Bugis Junction at 2.30pm. The crowd wasn’t overwhelming and seem to be quite a normal crowd on a Friday afternoon after lunch.
NEX Fairprice Xtra
When I reached NEX at 3.30pm, there was already a winding queue to enter Fairprice Xtra. Part of the queue was even diverted to a level below the supermarket.
Northpoint City Fairprice
Over in Yishun at about 3.15pm, a long queue can be spotted waiting to enter Fairprice on B2 in Northpoint City. This was shared to us by a friend of our page.
Jalan Bahar Sheng Siong
At about 4.30pm, another friend of our page shared the situation at a Sheng Siong Supermarket in Jalan Bahar which is located at 7 Jurong West Ave 5, #01-01/08, Singapore 649486.
Harbourfront Centre Cold Storage
At around 5.30pm, there is hardly any crowd in Cold Storage at Harbourfront Centre.
HDB Hub Fairprice
At 6.30pm, there was no overwhelming crowd at Fairprice at HDB Hub in Toa Payoh Central.
Situation from 2.30pm to 6.30pm
It seems that there were crowds turning up at various supermarkets in the heartlands between the first 4 hours after the new Phase 2 announcements. The crowds seem to have subsided now but we will continue to monitor the situation and provide you timely updates.
In Singapore, we love to shop in malls for the comfort and convenience. You can actually find many good deals in heartland centrals due to its lower operating costs. Bedok Central is a cool place to find many good deals.
New 24 hours supermarket selling China products
Scarlett Supermarket 思家客 just opened its newest store on Friday. It takes over the space previously occupied by Standard Chartered Bank. Like their other 3 stores, you can find. a good range of products in China at good prices. Compared to their 2 outlets in Chinatown, this store is relatively smaller, but you can still get some good buys if you do not wish to travel downtown. This store is open 24 hours.
